HomePorts to host Free 4-Part Education Series, “Getting your Affairs in Order” for Kent County Community
Beginning on March 20 and continuing every 3rd Thursday during April, May and June of 2025, local nonprofit HomePorts will host a free-to-the-public 4-part Education Series on the topic of “Getting your Affairs in Order” for residents of Kent County.
“Planning for the future—especially regarding finances, healthcare, and end-of-life decisions—is often overlooked, placing a financial and emotional burden on loved ones,” said Karen Carr, executive director of HomePorts. “This series will provide essential guidance on organizing personal affairs, so individuals and their families can feel secure and prepared for the years ahead.”
The Series Kickoff will be held on March 20, 2025, from 1-3pm at Town Hall in Chesterton. At this session, the first 20 registered attendees will be provided with a FREE Nokbox™ files organization system and an overview to its contents and usefulness in planning for the future. The session will also feature a special presentation “Future-Proofing your Home for Safe Aging in Place,” to be presented by John Hanley, a home renovation and repair expert. With 35 years as a mechanical engineer at Union Carbide and extensive experience in home renovation, John specializes in modifying homes to enhance safety and accessibility for aging residents. He has conducted home safety checks for HomePorts members and collaborates with local contractors to implement necessary modifications.
Future sessions to be held on April 17, May 15 and June 19 will feature expert speakers covering key topics such as estate and financial planning, establishing wills and durable power of attorney, and exploring assisted living options.
