Barbara McLendon has been a practicing audiologist since 1990. She completed her undergraduate degree in hearing and speech at the University of Maryland and her graduate degree in audiology at George Washington University. In May of 2009 she earned her doctorate degree in audiology from Salus University. Dr. McLendon completed her clinical fellowship year at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She worked for 10 years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in the audiology center, where she was active in clinic and hospital-wide quality improvement programs. She was awarded a Civilian Medal of Achievement for her leadership role in the Civilian Welfare Program. For the past 20 years, she has enjoyed serving the community through her private practice at the Hearing Center of Chestertown.

Michelle Hoon-Starr is an audiologist at The Hearing Center of Chestertown. Michelle graduated with her bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary in 2015, and her doctorate in audiology from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2023. Her clinical experiences have included placements in private practice, ENT, and hospital settings. She first joined HCC in 2022 as a doctoral extern, and stayed on as a full time audiologist after graduation. Michelle’s clinical interests include hearing aids, cochlear implants, and tinnitus evaluation and treatment. She is passionate about helping her patients improve their communication ability and overall quality of life.

Do you ever feel like people don’t speak as clearly as they used to? Do you find yourself asking friends and family to repeat themselves?

This presentation will review how we hear. We will provide a brief overview of hearing assistive devices, including hearing aids and accessories. We will also go over communication strategies for best understanding of speech, and other interventions such as cochlear implants.
